The Denby
Report is authored by Registered Dietitian Nigel Denby. The
Denby Report is
the leading and
authoritative review of nutritional subjects
written specifically for the media with
authenticated objectivity.
The Reports are designed to help journalists provide their audience
with accurate facts, varied and interesting enough to result in a
nutrition feature with depth and authority.
"I am a dietitian working with patients, the media and large
corporate organisations. I am faced with the same issues amongst
them all - people are confused, sceptical and just want to know the
truth about food, nutrition and health. My job is to present the
evidence in a way that it can be understood and applied. It doesn’t
matter whether I am: -
• advising a patient in a
clinic;
• acting as a consultant to a Primary Care Trust providing
advice about feeding young children in their care
• or appearing on Television talking to Millions of people about
a nutrition news story
As professionals we all
come across daily examples of the misreporting of nutrition issues,
as well as the sensationalising of poor quality research results
into “unofficial public health messages” or the simple
misunderstanding of the science altogether. These are all too
commonly seen in print, on the radio, television and in electronic
media.
It is this misreporting and misunderstanding which The Denby Reports
aim to change. As a health journalist, myself, I sometimes find
myself being asked to write about a whole host of subjects that I
couldn’t really claim to be expert in. However my training as a
dietitian means I have the skills to research and find more in depth
information to bring me up to date and write my copy. The average
health journalist often doesn’t have the time or resources to do the
same.
This is the inspiration for The Denby Reports: - to present
accurate, up to date information on nutrition and health issues to
journalists from a professional and trusted source. The Denby
Reports will provide information – on specialist health areas -
precisely and accurately in one place. This ensures that the right
information filters through to the end users - the consumer.
Over the years I have built up a network of nutrition and research
resources to which I return time and again to get specific, accurate
and up to date nutrition information. These, and my contacts in the
health education area, allows The Denby Reports to build into a
encyclopaedic range of information reports in specific health
subjects. These are available under licence to journalists for them
to reproduce and use in their articles and features."
2. About the Denby Reports
We design The Denby Reports to give journalists and health writers
useful and validated information for writing consumer articles,
features and reports. The information is presented in a number of
ways to provide what is needed at a glance or to explore some issues
in greater detail.
The main components of The Denby Reports are: -
• The Key Facts and Stats sections for sound bite, top line
information relating to the subject.
• The In-Depth Section explores the science behind the Stats and
Facts in more detail and explains technical terminology where
necessary.
• The References and Further Reading Section provides all the
professional references used to write The Denby Report and also
directs journalists to other reading and professional reports which
may be useful.
3. The Three Key Facts and Stats sections
The scene setting Fact and Stats provides the overview information
relating to the UK population, prevalence of relevant disease or
conditions and the potential health, economic and/or social
consequences of these. It puts into context the relevance and
importance of the topic to the reader.
The Nutrition Facts and Stats summarises the positive and/or
negative role of nutrition in the topic area and gives the top line
information on how diet or specific nutrients may offer some
potential benefit to consumers.
The Cautionary Facts and Stats outline the areas of the less robust
scientific knowledge which may weaken the case for nutritional
benefits. Where appropriate The Denby Report also outlines what to
look for in a food product or supplement and to assess its quality
and potential health benefit.
4. In Depth
This is for the journalist who needs more than just the top line
facts - where they need a detailed explanation of the Facts and
Stats information.
The report explores the strengths and weaknesses of the evidential
based information and where more evidence is needed to reach firm
conclusions. Evidence is put in context for a variety of relevant
population groups. Unfamiliar terminology is explained here.
5. References and further reading
The Denby Report provides all the information needed to write
accurately about a nutritional topic for consumer media. It can also
be used to direct journalists towards further reading for future
analysis.
This section provides a full academic and professional reference
list for the Report’s detail and a list of recommended websites or
information sources for reference.
The Denby Report aims to provide the broadest reference possible so
proprietary or commissioned research and analysis is provided
here. This research can be industry or commercially lead and is
provided with due emphasis relevant to the subject.
6. Pricing The Denby Report is made available under licence to individual
journalists or organisations on their behalf. The licence [or Group
Licence] allows for republication of any or all copyright material
contained within the Report. An example may be a Public Relations
Company who may purchase a Group Licence to be made available to a
select number of journalists of their choosing.
Group Licences are numbered under contract and are provided as
electronic copies in pdf format. Bound copies are charged at an
additional £25 [+VAT] per copy.
Group licences are purchased in advance with the purchaser provided
a minimum of ten numbered licences. Once these are assigned to
journalists the Purchaser must confirm their assignment to us.
Pricing available on demand.
7. Conclusion

specifically for the media with authenticated objectivity.
The Reports are designed to help journalists provide their audience
